As an activist in college and beyond, I ‘sat in’ with other activists even away from my school. I joined the Republic of New Africa, taking their classes and devouring books by, for, and about Black people. I was a mathematics teacher of secondary students for 43 years in D.C. Public Schools. The thing that is kind of interesting about that is I taught at a correctional facility for DC teens for 9 of those years. That was a revelation for a middle-class young woman. I am still a teacher today, teaching in and coordinating an ESL program at my church, Paint Branch UU Church in Adelphi, MD for the last 6 years.
